What’s new with STAND
The story tent continued its journey this week at Cander Park Fall Fest! Let us know if you know of a place we should go next!
Unite in Light was a major step for STAND and Atlanta in cross-organization mobilizing. There were some bumps, but a lot of good to be taken away – read below.
Action NOW!
On October 14th, Indivisible and other organizations across Atlanta will be holding a remembrance for George Floyd. Details are here.
The next national day of action is Saturday, October 18th. Join STAND for NO KINGS 2: Democracy Rising in Downtown Decatur. It’ll be family friendly, and impactful – you know how we roll.
We’ll take a big breath on October 22nd at STAND In a Pub (SIP) to reflect on a couple of months of intense organization and execution. Please note the date change! We’ll see you at The Marlay House.
Here are some other vetted actions sponsored by allies in the area including an opportunity to volunteer at a vaccine clinic.
Dear Friends,
Last Saturday, STAND joined an alliance of organizations across Atlanta to hold a vigil stretching from Midtown to Stone Mountain at 9 different sites. We gathered at Deepdene Park, and stretched for more than a quarter mile up the street with candles, signs, and music. I’ll admit that it was a bit chaotic at times, but here’s an important takeaway: we collectively coordinated action by more than 25 partner organizations leading to a successful event outside of a ‘major mobilization’ event day.
That’s really important, and it reflects a major shift in where we started 8 months ago. Activist communities across Atlanta are getting to know each other, and rapidly figuring out how to link arms and meaningfully organize in more targeted ways. Unite in Light may not ultimately be the most impactful event that we do, but it was a wonderful expression of the unification and community building that STAND continuously leans into. Thank you to those who joined us – we are just starting to see what this kind of joint action is capable of.
Speaking of major mobilization days, the 18th is coming. We are finishing plans for NO KINGS 2: Democracy Rising, and the word is getting out there. Please help that process along by liking and sharing our facebook event, and even reposting our event on nextdoor. For this event, we know that people will come. Our work is to keep people safe, excited, and eager to jump into the work that y’all have been so diligently involved in. We’ve had a busy few months, but have accomplished a whole lot. I’m looking forward to relaxing with you all after it wraps up (*note the date change!). Thanks, as always, for STANDing with us.
Sincerely,
Matt
