We have two weekends of sidewalk action planned – August 9th, and 16th. More details to come – keep an eye on facebook!
Stay tuned for action items from Coalition for a Diverse DeKalb on affordable housing, and join their newsletter here to stay in the loop.
STAND in Song is looking for songs! We are trying to build our playlist, so we’d love suggestions on the things that SIS can and should sing. Please send suggestions to Jeff at jeyoung50(at)proton(dot)me.
Dear Friends,
I believe that Saturday was a turning point for STAND. We’ve had a few of those in our short history together, but I left our meeting on Saturday feeling like our shared vision of what STAND could be was beginning to clarify itself. At our general meeting, we welcomed in leadership from the Coalition for Diverse DeKalb and Afghan American Alliance of Georgia who spoke to our members about the importance of affordable housing in our communities and the need to amplify the stories of our immigrant neighbors.
Over the past 6 months, STAND and its members have developed the tools to begin to push back on bad policy at a federal level and project the value of all human life into the world. On Saturday, we began to see how those same skills could be turned inward to make change in our own communities. I can see where we’re headed, and I think those in attendance could see it too. Let me be clear – we will not retreat from confronting federal policy that harms our communities. But as we do that work, we will begin to lean into our own backyard through coalition building and collaboration to find ways to amplify our message of human dignity into the spaces that we see everyday. We will stay in communication with these organizations and keep you informed as important actions arise – but for now keep your eyes on September 20th.
I’m grateful that you came out to see these three powerful women speak about the good they are doing in our community. I’m grateful that you gave us feedback that we can use to make STAND even stronger. I’m grateful to be in community with such an amazing group of people.
STANDing with you,
Matt
